Pet must be at least 12 weeks old before rabies vaccination, therefore the earliest a pet would be compliant is around 15 weeks old (12 weeks + 21-day wait).

So, it is best to comply with it, even if others are seemingly able to import younger animals.
Dogs must be given praziquantel-based tapeworm treatment by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 5 days (120 hours) before arrival in Great Britain.

Exempt if arriving directly from Finland, Ireland, Malta, Norway or Northern Ireland. The vet must record the treatment (date and time, product, manufacturer) in the AHC, pet passport or GB pet health certificate. Non-compliance can mean quarantine or refused entry, although border processes may allow for a new treatment to be given and wait 24-hours prior to release from the border facility. This would be at the owners expense (treatment, additional boarding, vet certification). If a pet vomits within the 24-hour period, the wait must start again and as border facilities can only hold non-compliant pets for up to 48-hours this may result in the pet needing to go to quarantine until such time that they are deemed adequately treated against tapeworm.
Must have an ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15-digit microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination.
Additional notes
Chip must be fitted (and readable) before the rabies vaccination, otherwise the vaccination does not count. If the chip is not 15 digits, the owner must bring a compatible scanner. Common examples include 9 digit AVID microchips, which are common in the USA, and 10 digit alphanumeric chips, usually fitted in Asian Countries.
From 22 April 2026, GB residents can no longer use EU pet passports to enter the EU. Even passports issued before that date may be rejected. Use an AHC instead.

EU pet passports may now only be issued to people whose main home is in the EU. GB residents can still use an EU pet passport for the return journey to GB.
Pets must travel on an approved route. An approved air, sea, rail or charter route and travel company from the published GOV.UK list.

The list changes and some routes are seasonal; always check before booking. Not required when travelling within the UK or from Ireland. Private boat arrivals only permitted from Ireland or Northern Ireland. No shared rule exists for this yet (could add).
The minimum age of a Cat or Dog being imported into England, Scotland and Wales has increased from 15 weeks old to 6 months old under new rules.

The Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Act 2025 has increased the minimum age of Cats and Dogs being imported into GB from 15 weeks old (which is the minimum age of compliance of a pet comming from a listed Country) to 6 months of age. This has been done to improve the welfare of animals being imported and there are no exemptions, even for rescue animals. This legislation is not yet well enforced as it is so new and still being finalised in respect of enforcing rights. So, it is best to comply with it, even if others are seemingly able to import younger animals.
Pets must arrive via approved Travellers First Point of Entry (TPOE) at designated airports and ports (including the Eurotunnel).

Approved entry points include Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh airports; Dover, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Holyhead ferry ports; Eurotunnel Folkestone. Compliance checks happen here on arrival.
Pets arriving from an unlisted country need a rabies antibody blood test: sample taken at least 30 days after vaccination, result of at least 0.5 IU/ml, then a 3-month wait from the sample date before entry.

Sample must be tested at an EU-approved laboratory. The 3-month wait does not apply if the pet was vaccinated, blood tested and documented in the EU before travelling to the unlisted country. The test stays valid as long as rabies boosters are kept up to date. For trips into GB, the date that is important to the timeline is the date the serum was drawn from the animal, not the test date.
Pet must travel with the correct document for the country it is travelling from: an EU pet passport (EU / Part 1 listed residents), a GB-issued AHC (valid for GB re-entry up to 6 months from issue), or a Great Britain pet health certificate (Part 2 listed and unlisted countries, in addition to Part 1 listd countries where owners are not eligable for an EU Pet Passport).

GB pet health certificate must be issued no more than 10 days before arrival in GB. Pet Health Certificates to GB can be used from EU if none of the other documents can be used, for example for non-EU residents from EU, where a pet passport cannot be used.
Pets must be transported as manifest freight (cargo) if arriving by air (cabin pets are not permitted on UK inbound flights, unless by private jet).

Exceptions: chartered private planes and guide/assistance dogs may travel in cabin. Use IATA-approved cargo agent (PetAir UK, IAG Cargo, etc.). Plan for £300-£1,500 in cargo handling fees. The Airline being used changes which border control post the pet enters into at Heathrow. If travelling on any of the following Airlines, the pet will arrive into Animal Aircare (AAC); Air India, Air Mauritius, Austrian Airlines, Emirates SkyCargo, (IAG Group; British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, Iberia Express), Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines, Turkish Airlines. All other Airlines operate into Heathrow Animal Reception Centre (HARC).
Pet must wait 21 full days after primary rabies vaccination before crossing UK borders.

Boosters administered without lapse are valid immediately. A lapsed booster counts as a primary dose and triggers a fresh 21-day wait.
A Nipah Certificate (test and declaration) is required for Cats and Dogs being imported into GB from Peninsular Malaysia, confirming the pet has tested negative for this virus within 10 days of travel and has not had contact with pigs within 60 days.

Hendra Certificate is required for Cats being imported into GB from Australia, confirming your cat has not been exposed to the Hendra virus in the 60 days leading up to export.

For UK residents travelling to the EU, an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) is required (issued max 10 days before travel).

AHC valid for entry to the EU for 10 days after issue; since 22 Apr 2026 it is then valid 6 months (previously 4) for onward EU travel and re-entry to GB, provided rabies cover stays valid. Still single-use - a new AHC is needed for each trip. If going on holiday for a short trip, consider whether tapeworm treatment might be needed prior to leaving the UK, to remain valid for return trip (if within 5 days).
If someone other than the owner travels with the pet, they must carry the owner's written authorisation. For EU entry, the pet must travel within 5 days of the owner.

5-day rule for EU entry applies since 22 Apr 2026; the written permission must travel with the pet's travel document. Day of pet travel is considered day 0. Currently some posts are enforcing that the date of pet travel is day 1 and while this is technically incorrect it would be best to comply to avoid issues at the border.
IPAFFS notification needed if the import is commercial.

Due to Brexit, GB is classed as a Part 2 (Part II) listed third country under the EU Pet Travel Scheme. GB residents are still able to use EU pet passports for their return journey to GB, but must use an AHC to leave GB to go to EU.
No quarantine needed for pets arriving from EU, EEA, listed third countries, or Channel Islands/Isle of Man, nor unlisted Countries. So long as all requirements of the Pet Travel Scheme is met.

Quarantine abolished for compliant pets in 2012. Non-compliant pets may be quarantined for up to 4 months, or refused entry if travelling by sea. All fees are the owner's responsibility (some insurance providers offer cover which includes costs incurred if quarantine is needed). Pets are re-prepared for entry while in quarantine, which may involve Rabies vaccinations and blood tests, depending on the stage at which preparations were not executed correctly. For pets that have been vaccinated too early, or are believed to be younger than their paperwork says, may need to stay in quarantine longer as they will need to be at least 12 weeks old when they have their rabies vaccination completed.
Northern Ireland (GB-NIR) maintains EU pet passport access under the Windsor Framework.

Guide and assistance dogs are exempt from the air-cargo requirement and have additional approved routes and companies.

Banned & Restricted Breeds
Any Dog containing a mix of the aforementioned banned breeds.
Status: Whether the Dog can enter GB freely, is dependent on the evidence presented and an assessment of the dog upon import. This is because, Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act bans 'any dog of that type' and so a mix of that breed will likely fall into this category. Owners should make the relevant border control post and status dogs unit aware of the Dog travelling. This process might involve sharing photographs, measurements and temperament details of the Dog being imported. This information should be emailed to statusdogs@met.police.uk and they will make a decision on whether they would need to carry out an assessment on the Dog on import. Often, they will make an initial decision of whether to visit based on the photographs. This will always be subjective and the only true way to make a decision is by visiting the Dog on the day of arrival. So, be aware that if the Dog is deemed a banned breed (or 'typed' as a banned breed, meaning they have the same traits as the criteria the banned breeds are assessed against) that this could mean that a pet will be dealt with as if it was a banned breed.
Exemptions: If the Dog is thought to be a mix, but has been rescued as so you do not have evidence to show this, then the determination of the type would come from the assessment post-import. If the Dog is deemed not to be a type, they may be eligible to be imported under normal rules. However, this is a risk so all dogs thought to, or known to be, a mix should be notified to the status dogs unit and border control post with plenty of notice. Owners may be advised not to attempt to import their dog.
Any Dog exhibiting 'substantial traits' of one of the aforementioned banned breeds.
Status: Whether the Dog can enter GB freely, determined upon import, based on their characteristics, traits and sometimes measurements. Guidance for enforcers sets out the measurements and typing of banned breeds. Owners can sense-check whether their pet could be considered a banned breed based of these requirements. Here are some of the criteria a Dog might be checked against when enforcers are checking for traits of a Pit Bull Terrier; When first viewing the dog it should appear square from the side, and its height to the top of its shoulders should be the same distance as from the front of its shoulder to the rear point of its hip, Its height to weight ratio should be in proportion, Its coat should be short and bristled (single coated), Its head should appear to be wedge shaped when viewed from the side and top but rounded when viewed from the front, The head should be around 2/3 width of shoulders and 25 percent wider at cheeks than at the base of the skull (this is due to the cheek muscles), The distance from the back of the head to between the eyes should be about equal to the distance from between the eyes to the tip of its nose, The dog should have a good depth from the top of head to bottom of jaw and a straight box-like muzzle, Its eyes should be small and deep-set, triangular when viewed from the side and elliptical from front, Its shoulders should be wider than the rib cage at the eighth rib, Its elbows should be flat with its front legs running parallel to the spine, Its forelegs should be heavy and solid and nearly twice the thickness of the hind legs just below the hock, The rib cage should be deep and spring straight out from the spine, it should be elliptical in cross section tapering at the bottom and not ‘barrel’ chested, It should have a tail that hangs down like an old fashioned ‘pump handle’ to around the hock, It should have a broad hip that allows good attachment of muscles in the hindquarters and hind legs, Its knee joint should be in the upper third of the dog’s rear leg, and the bones below that should appear light, fine and springy, Overall the dog should have an athletic appearance, the standard makes no mention of ears, colour, height, or weight. The dog is requires to meet a substantial number of the criteria in order to be considered mostly Pit Bull Terrier Type.
Any Dog known, or considered to be, a 'type' of the aforementioned banned breeds.
Status: Whether the Dog can enter GB freely, determined upon import, based on their characteristics, traits and sometimes measurements., Any dog that is deemed to have a substantial number of characteristics that are listed on the American Dog Breeders Association Standard for the breed. For Pit Bull Terriers (PBT), this is the American Dog Breeders Association standard of conformation, as published in the Pit Bull Gazette, vol 1, issue 3, 1977 and the number of characteristics must show that the Dog is 'more PBT' than any other breed of Dog, in order for a Dog to be 'Typed' as a PBT. Owners should make the relevant border control post and status dogs unit aware of the Dog travelling. This process might involve you sharing photographs, measurements and temperament details of the Dog being imported. This information should be emailed to statusdogs@met.police.uk and they will make a decision on whether they would need to carry out an assessment on the Dog on import. Often, they will make an initial decision of whether to visit based on the photographs. Must be neutered, microchipped, muzzled and on a lead in public, third-party insured. Importing, breeding, selling, gifting or abandoning XL Bullies is prohibited GB-wide.

AHC requirements
Up to 5 pets can be listed on a single AHC (as of current DEFRA rules), provided they are not travelling for commercial purposes. However, many OVs charge per animal regardless.
2 Dogs
Up to 5 pets on one AHC. Two dogs from same household can share one certificate.
3+ Dogs
Up to 5 pets on one AHC. Same OV appointment, one certificate. Some OVs still charge per animal but only one cert needed.
Dog + Cat
Dog and cat can be on the same AHC (up to 5 pets total, non-commercial).
Key rules: Up to 5 pets on a Single AHC. This is a DEFRA rule, you do NOT need separate AHCs for each pet. However, many OVs charge per animal.
Cost implications: £100-250 for the AHC appointment regardless of whether 1 or 5 pets. Some OVs may charge extra per animal for the examination.
Tips: Book all pets in a single OV appointment. Confirm with your OV that they'll list all pets on one AHC. Max 5 non-commercial pets per certificate.
Airline cabin limits
Most airlines allow only ONE pet in cabin per passenger. Some allow one per booking regardless of passenger count.
2 Dogs
Need two passengers to bring two cabin dogs. Some airlines limit total cabin pets per flight (often 2-3 across entire cabin).
3+ Dogs
Extremely difficult by air. Max 1 cabin pet per passenger, and airlines cap total pets per flight. Some pets likely need cargo.
Dog + Cat
Same rules apply, dog in one carrier, cat in another, need two passengers.
Key rules: Call airline before booking to confirm cabin pet availability. Some flights may already have their pet quota filled. Book early.
Cost implications: Cabin pet fee applies PER animal (not per booking). Typically £40-100 per pet per flight.
Tips: If both dogs are under weight limit, book two separate passengers. If only one qualifies for cabin, consider driving instead, splitting pets between cabin and cargo is stressful for everyone.
Airline cargo limits
Airlines limit total live cargo per flight. Large dogs take up more space and weight allocation in the cargo hold.
2 Dogs
Two large dogs in cargo is feasible but must book both well in advance. Some airlines charge per crate + per kg.
3+ Dogs
Contact airline cargo department directly for 3+ animals. May need to split across flights or use a pet relocation company.
Dog + Cat
Dog and cat should be in separate crates and ideally positioned away from each other in the hold (airlines usually handle this).
Key rules: Each animal needs its own IATA-approved crate. Two crates must both fit within the cargo allocation. Book cargo space Early.
Cost implications: Cargo fees per crate: £200-600+ depending on size and route. Two large dogs = £400-1,200+ in cargo fees.
Tips: For 3+ animals, seriously consider a pet relocation company. They handle logistics, documentation, and can charter or block-book cargo space.
Animals belonging to the same family as pet travel scheme animals that do not fall inside the scheme.
Animals other than Cats, Dogs and Ferrets do not fall inside the scope of the pet travel scheme and therefore travel under their own legislaton, which for terrestrial mammals, often involves doing so under a Rabies Import Licence. being under licence means that they must go straight into a quarantine facility and cannot travel in the same vessel as other pets in their family. For example a Rabbit would travel in hold 5 of an Aircraft, whereas the Dog from that same family would be pallitised and placed in the front cargo hold of that plane.
Animals imported under a Rabies licence must travel under their own AWB.
Animals that are travelling under a rabies licence (for example if they are known to be non-compliant with the import regulations into the UK) must travel under their own individual Air Waybill (AWB), even if there are other animals from the same family or house hold carrying out the same trip.

Crate sharing
Dogs Cannot share a crate for air travel under any circumstances (IATA Live Animals Regulations). Each animal must have its own crate.
2 Dogs
Two separate crates required. Even puppies from the same litter cannot share for air travel.
3+ Dogs
Three separate crates. Consider the logistics of transporting 3+ large crates to the airport.
Dog + Cat
Absolutely separate crates. Dog and cat must never be in same crate.
Key rules: IATA regulations strictly prohibit crate-sharing for commercial air transport. No exceptions.
Cost implications: Must buy/hire separate crates per animal. IATA crates for large dogs cost £80-300+ each.
Tips: For ferry/Eurotunnel travel, dogs CAN share the car space, this is one major advantage of driving vs. flying with multiple pets.
Eurotunnel with multiple pets
Eurotunnel allows multiple pets in your vehicle. No separate pet fee, pets travel free as part of your vehicle booking.
2 Dogs
Both dogs stay in your car. Free. No additional booking required. Just present documentation for each dog at check-in.
3+ Dogs
All dogs in your car. Free. Present individual documentation for each at check-in. Staff will check each microchip.
Dog + Cat
Dog and cat both in car. Free. Separate documentation for each.
Key rules: Eurotunnel has no pet limit per vehicle. All pets travel free. Each needs their own AHC and documentation.
Cost implications: FREE. This is the most cost-effective option for multi-pet households.
Tips: Eurotunnel is the multi-pet household's best friend. No fees, no limits, no separation, no crates required (just secure in vehicle). 35 minutes and done.
Ferry with multiple pets

2 Dogs
Most ferries allow multiple dogs per vehicle with no additional documentation hassle. Pet-friendly cabins may have a 2-dog limit.
3+ Dogs
Check ferry operator for max pets per booking. Most allow 2 in a pet cabin; more than 2 may need to stay in the vehicle on car deck.

Most ferries allow dogs and cats together in the vehicle. Pet cabins typically have a limit but you can have different species.
Key rules: Check each operator's multi-pet policy. Brittany Ferries, P&O, and Dfds all have different limits for pet cabins.
Cost implications: Some operators charge per pet (£15-30 each), others per booking. Ferry pet fees are generally much cheaper than airline fees for multiple animals.
Tips: Ferry + driving is usually the best option for multi-pet households. Everyone stays together, no crate requirements (just seatbelt harnesses or car crates), and much less stressful for the animals.
Pet-friendly accommodation
Many "pet-friendly" properties have limits on number of pets. Commonly 1-2 pets max. Fees usually per pet per night.
2 Dogs
Most pet-friendly places accept 2 dogs. Always confirm in advance. Expect £10-30/night per dog surcharge.
3+ Dogs
3+ dogs significantly limits accommodation options. Self-catering cottages/villas are often best as they have fewer restrictions than hotels. Booking.com filters are unreliable for 3+ pets.
Dog + Cat
Confirm property accepts both species. Some places welcome dogs but not cats, or vice versa.
Key rules: Always phone/email directly to confirm multi-pet acceptance. Online "pet-friendly" filters rarely account for number of pets.
Cost implications: Pet surcharges add up fast with multiple animals. £20/night x 2 dogs x 7 nights = £280 extra. Factor this into budget.
Tips: Self-catering properties (gîtes, villas, cottages) are almost always better for multi-pet households. More space, fewer restrictions, lower pet fees, enclosed gardens for dogs.
Pets imported under a rabies movement licence into GB
Pets being imported into GB under a Rabies licence are not permitted to share a space with any other animal, due to the risk of rabies. This includes not being put in the same cargo hold, not being transported in the same vehicle and not sharing a kennel or container with any other animal.

Sharing kennels / Catteries on arrival to BCPs
Pets belonging to the same family and AWB number can share a kennel on arrival to some UK Border Control Posts (BCPs). The number and weight of the pets that can share depends on the specifics of the kennel licencing at that place. However, if one pet fails the pet travel scheme and needs to go to quarantine, sharing a kennel might mean that the other pets must also go into quarantine with the failed pet. Pets imported under a licence are not permitted to share a kennel with pets imported under the pet travel scheme and vice versa.
2 Dogs
Upto 2 Medium Dogs of a certain weight can share a kennel at Animal Aircare Heathrow.
3+ Dogs
Up to 3 pets of the same species can share a kennel at HARC.
Dog + Cat
Only animals of the same species can share kennels or catteries.
Tapeworm treatment (return to UK)
Each pet needs their own tapeworm treatment within the 1-5 day window before UK return.
2 Dogs
Both dogs need treatment in the same window. Book a single vet appointment for both. Ensure both are stamped on their respective AHCs.
3+ Dogs
All dogs need treatment. A single appointment can cover all, but make sure vet stamps EACH AHC individually.
Dog + Cat
Both dog and cat need tapeworm treatment. Same vet, same appointment, same treatment (Praziquantel), separate AHC stamps.
Key rules: ONE missed tapeworm treatment means that specific pet is refused UK entry. The others can enter. The untreated pet faces quarantine.
Cost implications: Vet consultation abroad for tapeworm: typically €30-60 per animal. Multi-pet appointment may be cheaper per head.
Tips: Set ONE alarm for all pets' tapeworm treatment. Do them all in the same appointment. Double-check each AHC is stamped individually.
